BIO
Jonathan Joubert is a British artist based between Brighton and Montreal. His work spans painting, drawing, and digital environments.
Working primarily in oil on aluminium and on paper, Joubert’s practice is structured around the tension between instinctive mark making and highly controlled process. Rapid drawings made with permanent marker often form the foundation of his paintings, which are developed through a traditional method of underpainting, layered colour, and glazing. Areas of exposed aluminium remain visible, allowing light to function as a material within the work and introducing subtle perceptual shifts.
His work frequently centres on solitary figures, divers, and suspended forms that occupy ambiguous psychological or cosmic spaces. These recurring images explore themes of transition, presence, and the human figure held between states of emergence and disappearance.
Alongside his physical works, Joubert develops digital settings that extend the spatial and atmospheric concerns of his paintings, placing his imagery within vast constructed environments that explore scale, distance, and perception.
Across media, his work is concerned with how images hold time, how decisions remain visible, and how presence can be built through restraint.
